Teach children actions for the consonants. Write the letter on one side of the large index card and the action on the other. The first time you teach each letter, make a big deal about it. Get out the rhythm sticks and the marching music when you march. Go out to the playground and jump rope and do jumping jacks.

Once children have learned actions for several letters, there are many activities you can do in your classroom. Have the children stand by their desks without props. The teacher needs to reinforce the learning by saying, AYes, I see everyone marching because M is our marching letter.@

  • Show them a letter, they do the action.
  • Do the action, they say the letter.
  • Pass out the cards to individual students, the child does the action, the class guesses the letter, then everyone does the action.
  • Follow the Leader Letter C leader picks a letter, everyone follows the leader doing the same action.
