while you are reading Chapter two with a partner, I want you to decide
on 4, 5, or 6 important words. Use highlighting tape or sticky notes
to record the words on.
During reading
Read with partners
After reading
List the chosen words and put a tally mark after each word to indicate
how many times the word is chosen. Decide through class discussion which
words the students feel are the most important. Remember to stress USING
THE BOOK to justify answers.

I notice that my students are ready to switch to another comprehension
lesson. So I then switch to teaching PREDICTIONS.
Before Reading —
Making Predictions. Have the class sit in a circle. Re-read the last
paragraph of yesterday's chapter. Make a prediction of what you think
might happen. Then go around the circle, "I think ________ might happen."
During Reading —
Think about the predictions that you and your classmates made while
you are reading today. What sentences in the story change what your
predictions are?
After Reading —
Sit in a circle and share how the predictions change.
Continue the next
several chapters making predictions and noting how the text helps change
the predictions.
