quick way to learn about expository text

Each child gets out their science or social studies book.

Read the title.
Close books.
Teacher records what the class knows about the title in black ink. I write on overhead. Some teachers write on a poster or the board.
Open books.
Read the headings.
Close books.
Add to the brainstorming with a different color ink.
Open books.
Read the bold face words and subheadings.
Close books.
Add to the brainstorming with a different color ink.
Open books.
Read one section with the students.
Close books.
Add to the brainstorming with a different color ink. Come up with a main idea sentence, record on the board or another overhead.
Continue with each section following this: read section, record, etc.
